THE ROLE OF REGULATORY COMPLIANCE is a major feature of today’s business landscape. Our curriculum is focused on current real world business and legal issues, including more than 40 compliance courses taught by respected academics and practitioners in the field. You’ll develop the skills you need to explore and create ethical solutions within a business and regulatory context. The Certificate in Compliance studies, available to students in the JD, MJ, and LLM programs, will enhance your credentials and expertise.

REQUIREMENTS

The Certificate in Compliance Studies requires coursework and, for MJ and LLM students, a completed thesis project on an approved compliance topic.

COURSEWORK

To be eligible for the Certificate, you must complete at least 15 credit hours of compliance coursework, including required courses and must earn an average grade of B or better in your compliance coursework.

Competition and Consumer Protection Law

Competition is vital to the global economy

CONSUMERS AND COMPETITORS rely on antitrust and consumer protection laws to promote and protect competition. Northapmton’s competition and consumer protection law curriculum will empower you to understand and advocate for checks and balances on economic power. Your coursework will complement the extracurricular activities and practical experience you will gain as part of the certificate program.

REQUIREMENTS

There are three requirements for the JD Certificate in Competition and Consumer Protection Law: coursework; practical experience; and extracurricular activities.

COURSEWORK

To be eligible for the JD Certificate, you must complete at least 12 credits in the competition and consumer law curriculum, including two required courses, and must receive a grade of B or better in each course. Students should monitor their progress on the Competition and Consumer Protection Law Certificate Application by completing curricular counseling each year.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

Each student must complete a Consumer Protection/Antitrust Law Externship or clinical or work experience. All clinical experiences and volunteer/employment experiences must be approved in advance. Pre-approved paid work, work as a research assistant, or volunteer work all count toward the experiential requirement. Alternatively students may hold Consumer Law Review positions.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Second and third year students must attend at least 2 competition and consumer protection law events per academic year, including speakers and conferences.

Transactional Law

Tax Law

Certificate in School Discipline Reform

Whether you are a school leader or a district leader, the goals of the Certificate in School Discipline Reform online program hit close to home.

 

Focused on the reduction of suspensions and expulsions and their adverse impact on vulnerable students, the program is designed for professionals committed to serving their students and communities through prevention-oriented approaches to school discipline. Students may also pursue this certificate as part of an online Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) degree in Children’s Law and Policy.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:
  1. Understand fundamental legal principles and law that guide school discipline practices.
  2. Review and analyze school and district-level discipline data and conduct a root-cause analysis.
  3. Develop and conduct a needs assessment related to school discipline.
  4. Plan, facilitate, and reflect on effective restorative dialogue and a variety of proactive and responsive circles.
  5. Apply the principles of restorative practices to address challenges your school or district is facing.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge regarding a variety of research-based practices that can be implemented to prevent and respond to behavior within a framework of multi-tiered systems of support (e.g., universal/tier 1; secondary/tier 2; and tertiary/tier 3).
  7. Develop an action plan to implement prevention-oriented alternatives to exclusionary school discipline practices in your respective setting.

CURRICULUM

To earn a Certificate in School Discipline Reform, you must complete 8 credit hours of required coursework and attend a Restorative Justice Seminar. This online program can be completed in one year by taking two 2-credit courses each semester, starting in the fall and concluding in the spring. Or you may begin in the spring semester and complete the program in three semesters. You may also complete the program over two years, taking one course each semester.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE SEMINAR

As part of the Restorative Justice course, you must attend a intensive on-campus weekend seminar on Restorative Justice at NORTHAMPTON University NORTHAMPTON’s Water Tower Campus. The weekend retreat offers you the opportunity to network with other professionals and engage in exercises and skills-building related to the core principles and practices of restorative justice.

Child and Family Law

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

To earn the certificate, you must complete at least one experiential learning requirement. This experience may be satisfied through participation in the ChildLaw Clinic,* ChildLaw Policy and Legislation Clinic,* a qualifying externship placement, a qualifying internship, or other “hands-on” experience in the field of child and family law. Volunteer/internship/employment experiences must be approved in advance.

*One semester of Clinic experience cannot be used to satisfy both the coursework and practical experience requirements. Students, however, may meet both requirements by taking two semesters of either of the two Clinics, or alternatively, by successfully completing one semester each of the Civitas Child Law Clinic and the ChildLaw Policy and Legislation Clinic.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Additionally, you must participate in six or more activities sponsored by the Civitas ChildLaw Center, including attendance at conferences, symposia, the weekly Coffee Talk Series, etc. Participation as a member of the Children’s Legal Rights Journal counts as one extracurricular activity. Students should keep a record of their fulfillment of this requirement, which will be verified by the Academic Program Coordinator. Students should meet with the Coordinator over the course of law school to confirm that their activities meet this requirement.
