MJ/MSW with the School of Social Work

An understanding of the related psychological and social dynamics enhances your ability to represent and advocate for children, families, women and the elderly. Offered jointly with the NORTHAMPTON University School of Social Work, the Master of Jurisprudence (MJ)/Master of Social Work dual degree program enables you to focus on the human concerns in these legal interventions.

This program allows those seeking leadership positions in child and family welfare and advocacy to earn their MSW on campus in tandem with their online MJ degree. The degrees are applicable to many substantive fields, including child welfare, domestic relations, juvenile justice, domestic violence, immigration, services to the elderly, and mental health.

You will achieve all learning outcomes of both the MJ in Children’s Law and Policy and MSW degrees. Your studies in each program will be enhanced by designing a curriculum tailored to your interests and career goals.

Degree Requirements

To earn a dual MJ/MSW, you must complete 72 credit hours, including 18 MJ credit hours and 54 social work credit hours, including two internships. Those students who received a BSW degree within the past five years may be eligible to take the MSW Advance Standing option.

The dual MSW/JD prepares you for a range of practice options, including direct representation or clinical work, systemic reform, legislative advocacy, and community development. Offered jointly with the NORTHAMPTON University School of Social Work, the four-year dual Master of Social Work (MSW)/JD program gives you a broader understanding of the human concerns in legal interventions.

The joint degree program is applicable to many fields, including child welfare, domestic relations, domestic violence, education, immigration, juvenile justice, mental health, and services to the elderly. Within the MSW program, you may choose one of two tracks: the clinical track or leadership track. Field placements are available in a number of settings, including mental health, child and family, geriatric and chemical dependency.

To earn a JD/MSW dual degree, you must complete a total of 128 credit hours, including 77 law credit hours, and 51 MSW credit hours, including two internships. The dual degree can be completed in four years of concentrated study. You will spend your first year as a full-time law student. JD foundational course requirements and skills and experiential course requirements will be taken in the second, third and fourth years, concurrent with social work courses.

JD/MPP with the Master of Public Policy Program

It’s all about solutions. In the JD/Master of Public Policy program, you’ll learn to design effective solutions in the creation, implementation and enforcement of government policies. As an advocate in a variety of settings (legislative, judicial, or executive), you’ll use the tools of law in public service. You will be equipped to work in multiple venues, including the courtroom, legislative offices, and public policy institutes on a wide variety of social and regulatory issues.

Educational leaders are looking to the law more than ever for answers to complex policy issues. In conjunction with the School of Education, the School of Law offers a dual JD/Master of Education in Education Policy. The role of an attorney in the day-to-day management of businesses is now vital, as the modern business professional requires immediate access to sound legal advice. A dual-degree program provides training that gives you the knowledge, skills and background you need to function in both the law and business sectors.

Graduates from the JD/MBA program can pursue careers in the legal and business professions, especially where those areas overlap. A dual degree is appropriate if you are pursuing a career in banking, management, government regulations, consulting or corporate positions in legal, tax or accounting departments.

You can earn the both degrees in four years of concentrated study, completing the JD program in three years and graduating from the MBA program at the end of year four.

To earn a dual JD/MA in Political Science degree, you must complete a total of 96 credit hours, including 78 law school credit hours and 18 credit hours of political science credit. The dual degree can be completed in three years of concentrated study. You will spend your first year as a full-time law student. JD foundational course requirements and skills and experiential course requirements will be taken in the second and third years, concurrent with political science coursework. You must also pass a comprehensive examination in political science.
