This programme is studied on campus.

Law at Northampton looks at the historical, social, political and economic forces that influence our legal systems and govern our societies. You will learn to think like a lawyer rather than just ‘learn’ law.

A major factor in our quality is the calibre and enthusiasm of our staff, testing your mental agility with complex, realistic legal scenarios as you get to grips with criminal, public and private law, legal systems, contracts, human rights and explore family law, the law of property and legal aspects of the EU.

You will also add courses including managing organisations, managing customers and markets, the context of business and the legal aspects of organisations and insolvency – gaining useful specialist knowledge of the law as it applies to the world of organisations, management and business.

You will also have lots of opportunity to hone your developing legal skills in student-led initiatives such as mock legal debating, our highly active Law Society, the students’ journal in which your work may be published and our community law clinic – the Northampton Law Project.

Should you choose to practise law, you will have a wide variety of career options within legal professions. However, more than a third of Northampton law graduates now choose to use their law degree as a passport for entry into a wide range of careers including the business world for which you will be ideally prepared, media, finance and banking, teaching, governmental bodies and departments and the police force.

Assessment Methods

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods:

  • coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course;
  • practical assessments of the skills and competencies learnt on the course; and
  • written examinations at the end of each course.

The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, year of study and individual courses.

Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

Course Overview

Overview

Business Management and Information Systems at Northampton brings together a solid grounding in business, people and organisations with in-depth study of how organisations of all sizes and in all sectors use information systems and technology as vital tools for business success. This excellent combination of subjects, with invaluable input from industry and emphasis on teamwork, has a brilliant track record in securing employment for our graduates with major blue-chip companies.

In Business Management you’ll gain a wide perspective and thorough grounding in all areas of business, including skills in accountancy and statistics. Your knowledge will develop in the dynamic, international environment of our Business School of 45 nationalities, in small classes, taught by leaders in the fields of business practice and theory, corporate finance, and organisational change, and supported by dedicated careers advisers.

Information Systems uses the strength of our Computing Science experts, to add hands-on skills in computing to management and accounting classes. In your third year you’ll tackle a year-long software engineering project, working as part of a team, to develop a major software system from initial analysis to final delivery, and emphasising teamwork as strongly as technical skills. In your final year you’ll tackle an individual project, on a real-life scenario which may involve a local company.

The BSc option of this degree means you will focus primarily on the science based subjects when it comes to courses of choice.

Business Studies allows you to apply your skills in consultancy, advertising, banking, insurance, logistics, manufacturing, public relations, HR, sales, retail, and buying as a minimum. You have a very strong set of employment options in combination with Information Systems and you can choose careers in database administration, systems analyst, database engineer, and information systems.

About the course

Gain a broad understanding of how to successfully manage an organization, its processes, and the people in it.

Corporations face difficult and complicated issues in a highly regulated environment, and so need managers who understand the legal aspects of business.

By exploring key aspects of business law such as contract law, tort law and intellectual property law alongside your business degree you will further develop your knowledge and learn how to apply theory to real-life situations – making you efficient and effective in any organisational, cultural or social context.

We will consider you as an individual and take into account all elements of your application, not just your qualifications. We are looking for breadth and depth in your current studies and enthusiasm for the subject you wish to study.

This means the points you will be asked for are different to previous years but the grades you receive have not changed.

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

The Careers Advisors meet you at Induction, to introduce you to the Careers Service and how they can support you as you define and work towards your future career. The Careers Advisors, Career Service, and Work Placement Office meet you at the end of your first year to discuss options available to students and the support structures available to you. You will also have formal sessions in the second and third year inductions.

You are introduced formally to the theory of career planning and management, based on SOAR (Self Awareness, Opportunities Awareness, Aspirations, and Results) in Foundations of Business Management unit. This work will be continued and integrated within second year units at appropriate points. You are encouraged to use the various Career Management on-line tools available for self-assessment and identification of career opportunities

In your final year you are encouraged to take greater responsibility for your career management, with the support of the Careers Service, which offer one-to-one career coaching.
